Does ChatGPT Remember What You Tell It? Memory, Case by Case

A table of eight cases, from temporary and archived chats to deleted ones and projects, showing what ChatGPT carries into new chats and where to clear it.

Yes, partly. ChatGPT can carry things into new chats through two memory settings: saved memories, which are details it keeps about you, and reference chat history, which lets it draw on your past conversations. You can see both under Settings, then Personalization, and turn either one off. What it keeps also depends on the kind of chat you are in, so a temporary chat, an archived chat and a deleted chat all behave differently. The table below goes case by case. This is as of late 2026, and OpenAI changes these features often, so check OpenAI's Memory FAQ for your plan and country.

Does ChatGPT remember across chats?

Yes, when memory is on. Saved memories work like a short notepad: if you mention that you are vegetarian, live in Oslo or are training for a half marathon, ChatGPT may note it and use it in later chats. You can also ask it directly, with something like "Remember that I work night shifts" or "Forget that I mentioned my sister."

Reference chat history is broader and harder to see. ChatGPT draws on what came up in earlier conversations without adding it to a list you can read. There is nothing to edit item by item, only a switch. OpenAI extended a lighter version of it to free accounts in June 2025, and people in the UK, the EEA and Switzerland were asked to turn it on rather than getting it automatically.

In 2026 OpenAI started rolling out a newer version that updates what ChatGPT remembers in the background and shows it as a memory summary you can read and edit. It is reaching plans and countries at different times, so depending on yours you may see the two switches, the summary, or both.

What does ChatGPT remember, case by case?

Here is each situation people search for, whether it carries into a brand new chat, and where to look. Menu names shift a little between the app and the website, but these are the places to start.

As of late 2026. Check OpenAI's Memory FAQ for what your plan and country get.
CaseDoes it carry into new chats?Where to check or delete it
A normal chat with memory onIt can. Details may become saved memories, and the chat can feed chat history.Settings, Personalization, Manage memories. Delete the chat itself from the sidebar.
Saved memoriesYes, until you delete them. They stay even after the chat they came from is deleted.Settings, Personalization, Manage memories. Delete one at a time or clear them all.
Reference chat historyYes, while the switch is on. Nothing is listed, so you cannot remove single items.Settings, Personalization. Turn the switch off, or delete the chats you do not want drawn on.
Temporary chatNo. It is not saved to your history and does not create memories. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety.Nothing to clear. Start one from the temporary chat option at the top of a new chat.
Archived chatIt may. Archiving hides a chat from the sidebar but does not delete it, and OpenAI lists archived chats among the places to clear.Settings, Data controls, Archived chats. Unarchive or delete from there.
Deleted chatThe chat no, but a saved memory made from it yes. The chat is removed from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, with legal and security exceptions.Delete any memory it created separately, in Manage memories.
Memory turned offNo. ChatGPT stops using and creating memories, but what is already saved is not erased.Same settings page. Delete old memories first if you want them gone, not just paused.
A projectChats in a project use its files and instructions. On some plans a project can be set to project-only memory when you create it.The project's own settings. Delete files or chats inside the project.

Does ChatGPT remember deleted chats?

The chat itself, no. A deleted chat leaves your history straight away, and OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion within 30 days, unless it was already de-identified or has to be kept for security or legal reasons. Deleted chats cannot be brought back.

The catch is saved memories. They are stored apart from your chats, so a memory created in a chat survives that chat being deleted. If you told ChatGPT about a health scare and it saved that, deleting the conversation leaves the memory in place. Open Manage memories and delete it there too.

Do temporary and archived chats count?

A temporary chat is the closest thing to talking off the record. ChatGPT does not save it to your history, does not build memories from it, and does not use it to train models while it stays temporary. OpenAI may still keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety checks. Some versions offer a temporary chat that uses your existing memory to personalize answers, so look at the options when you start one.

Archived chats are a different thing. Archiving is tidying, not deleting: the chat leaves the sidebar but stays in your account and stays searchable. OpenAI's Memory FAQ lists archived chats among the places you have to clear if you want something fully forgotten, and its wording on archived chats has changed over time. If you want something gone, delete the chat rather than archive it.

Does ChatGPT remember previous conversations in the same chat?

Within one chat, yes. Everything earlier in the conversation is in front of the model when it answers, up to a limit. In a very long thread that runs for months, the earliest parts can fall out of view, so details from the start may get fuzzy.

That is different from memory, which is about carrying information into a new chat. People often mix the two up when a long thread suddenly seems to forget something.

Does ChatGPT remember everything you tell it?

No. ChatGPT decides what is worth keeping, and it leans toward stable, useful facts: your job, your city, your diet, the project you keep asking about. A passing comment about a hard week usually does not become a saved memory, although chat history may still pick it up.

You also cannot see all of it. The saved memories list and the newer summary are readable, but chat history is not a list, and OpenAI describes the summary as a high-level view rather than everything. The quickest check is to ask: "What do you remember about me?" The answer is useful, but it is not a complete record.

How do you see and delete what ChatGPT remembers?

Two details trip people up. Turning memory off does not delete what is already saved, and if you switch it back on later, ChatGPT may build new memories from older chats still in your history. Telling it in a chat to forget something works for saved memories, but check the list afterward to be sure it happened.

The steps are the same on iPhone, Android and the website, give or take a menu name:

  • Open Settings, then Personalization.
  • Under Memory, open Manage memories, or the memory summary if you have the newer version, and read what is there.
  • Delete single items, or clear them all.
  • Switch off reference saved memories, reference chat history, or both, if you want ChatGPT to stop using them.
  • Delete chats you no longer want drawn on, including old ones under Data controls, Archived chats.
  • For one sensitive conversation, start a temporary chat instead of a normal one.

Is ChatGPT memory used to train its models?

Memory and training are separate switches. Memory decides what ChatGPT uses when it talks with you. The training setting decides whether your chats can help improve OpenAI's models, and for personal accounts it is on unless you change it, under Data controls, "Improve the model for everyone".

Turning off training does not turn off memory, and turning off memory does not stop training. If you write anything personal in ChatGPT, check both.

What does this mean if you journal in ChatGPT?

If you use ChatGPT as a diary, memory cuts both ways. It can save you from explaining your job and family every time, but you do not choose what it keeps, and the same account holds your work questions and your hardest nights. The wider pros and cons of using ChatGPT as a journal, including whether it remembers what you said last month, are their own question.

A simple habit helps: write the heavy entries in a temporary chat, and after any normal session where you shared something personal, open Manage memories and see what stuck. The same thinking about real names in an AI journal applies here: use the least detail that still lets you think clearly.

For the memory part, keep these out unless you are happy for them to stick:

  • Health details, diagnoses and medication, unless you want them kept as facts about you.
  • Other people's full names next to anything private, like a friend's divorce or a coworker's health. Initials or a role, such as "my manager", work fine.
  • Addresses, account numbers and anything you would not want quoted back in an unrelated chat.
  • Things said in anger that you would not want treated as a lasting fact about you or someone else.

How is a journal app's memory different?

A general assistant remembers what helps it answer your questions. A journal with memory is built around what happens in your life over weeks: who you mentioned, what you planned, what you said you wanted to change. Many journaling apps store entries without carrying details forward, which is why AI journals with memory are a small group.

Reflectize works the second way. It keeps track of the people, places, plans and goals you write about, and when you come back it asks a follow-up question, such as how the talk with your manager went. It will not help you write an email or fix a spreadsheet. It is narrower than ChatGPT, and that narrow focus is the point.
